What does Holistic Dental Care even mean?
by Charlotte de Courcey-Bayley
We are a dental practice that has a unique touch. We go above and beyond in the quality of service you normally would experience at a regular general dental practice. Our focus is on you as a person, not just on your teeth and gums. We take the time to understand why your oral health care presents the way it does and focus on providing information to help you improve your overall wellbeing.
Our practice motto is, "together we help people get well and stay well".
We coordinate with a variety of co-practitioners such as Bowen Therapists, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Nutritionists, and other Dental Specialists such as Endodontists, Myofacial Therapists and Oral Surgeons. In addition to our great network of highly skilled practitioners we use the latest technology in our practice. We even have a product called NuCalm to help you relax during dental treatments.
From the moment you step into our practice you will see and feel the difference compared to a regular general dentist. Checking in for an appointment is much like checking into a 5 star hotel. We show we care. You are greeted with a smile, after which you can relax in our comfortable lobby and listen to soothing music surrounded by a nice collection of art. You will always look forward to your next appointment with us.
During normal sleep the muscles of the tongue and soft palate work to hold your airway open. However for some people these muscles start to lose their tone (firmness) and the diameter of airway reduces. The narrow airway makes breathing more difficult and the loss of tone in the muscles of the airway allow the tissues to vibrate. This vibration creates the snoring sound. Snoring sounds may be made in the nose or in the mouth, either behind the tongue or from the soft palate. If the tissues relax enough, the airway closes off. This is called: obstructive sleep apnoea
Drinking alcohol makes the muscles more floppy and snoring will be louder.
Lying on your back allows the tongue to fall back in the mouth or the jaw to drop open making the snoring worse. Loud snoring can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea, but sometimes it is just loud snoring.
One of the largest concerns of a snorer is the strain it puts on ther relationship. It isn't much fun being kicked out to sleep on the lounge or in the spare bedroom or sleeping alone.
Are you prepared to risk any of these problems? Maybe you are already noticing some of these signs.

Recognising sleep disorders can actually be quite difficult as people will rarely discuss their sleep problems with their dentist. However, because our patients visit us two or three times a year a dentist is well placed to recognize the early signs of sleep problems.A common symptom of sleep disordered breathing problems (SDB) is tooth grinding or clenching. So patients might report to us broken teeth or waking with sore jaws. They may have gum disease of gum recession. Headaches first thing in the morning are common. Finally because we check your medical history every six months we can see if there are changes or problems controlling your blood pressure or any type of diabetes.
A thorough dental examination by an experienced dentist will often show tell-tale signs of airway obstruction and snoring problems.
What is the Vital Breathing-Method? It is a system of breathing analysis and correction that helps you achieve good health through optimal breathing. It corrects the common condition of hyperventilation, over breathing, obvious (acute) or hidden (chronic). It is based on the Buteyko Method which uses breath control, breathing exercises and education to help you understand your condition, control symptoms and prevent illness. The Buteyko (bew-tay-ko) Breathing Method was developed by Russian doctor Konstantin Buteyko. During his work as a young doctor in the 1950s, Buteyko discovered that 'hidden hyperventilation' or over-breathing was the common underlying problem in a large number of health conditions. He observed that people became more ill when their breathing volume increased further. Those who then reduced their breathing began to recover. He devised the Buteyko Breathing Method to retrain correct breathing. The result is that the nose unblocks, asthma can be controlled with fewer drugs, and the breathing rate reduces to restore the CO2 level to normal.
DDo headaches affect the quality of your life?
Do you see your chiropractor or osteopath every one or two weeks to stop your neck or back being painful?
Did anyone tell you that the cause of your pain could be your jaw joint?
Have you ever had a dentist ignore your questions or skirt around the answer? Our practice philosophy has been driven by our client's questions. And if we do not know the answer we have an extensive network of affiliated practitioners whom we can ask.
